In the 1871 census Charles is aged 7 and a “scholar” living at 15 Brooks Road, Raunds with his Father, Reuben an Agricultural Labourer and Mother, Sarah a Lace Maker and three sisters.
Charles’mother died aged 39 in 1876 leaving eight children aged from just born to 14.
In 1881 Charles is aged 17 and occupation is Agricultural Labourer, still at Brooks Road with his Father, two brothers and three sisters. It is understood that Charles had paid for his own education.
Charles (a shoe machinist) married Sarah Jane Pendered on 26 December 1887 at the Raunds Wesleyan Methodist Church. By 1891 he
was a Blake Machinist living at Millington Road and one son Walter Cyril aged 2.
On 20thNovember 1891 after a meeting held at the Coffee Tavern in the autumn of that year, Raunds Distributive Society Limited was registered, Charles Groom and his brother in law Arthur Pendred were two of the first seven directors. Charles opened the new main Co-operative store in Grove Street on 1st June 1901, the day being a grand occasion and celebrations began with a procession headed by the Raunds Temperance Band and continued with a public tea provided in a large marquee in Spinney Field and entertainments followed in the evening.
In the 1901 census Charles is living in the house he had built on Lawson Street, with his wife Sarah J and six children. His occupation is described as Manager of coop Boot Factory. This factory was the St Crispins (the patron saint of shoemakers) boot and shoe factory in
Sackville Street
On Monday 30 August 1915 the death of Mr Charles Groom of Lawson Street after a long and painful illness was announced - “the fifty one year old was well known in Co-operative circles and the current president of Raunds Distributive Co-operative Society having been one of its founders. He was also one of the founders of the St Crispen Productive Co-operative Society and was manager at the time of his death. A local preacher of the Wesleyan Methodist Circuit he was also one of the Wesleyan School trustees. He had been a member of the first Town Parish Council and then the Urban Council at one time being Chairman. A director of the Raunds Hotel & Coffee Tavern he was also actively associated with the "Beehive" Tent of the Independent Order of Rechabites. Charles Groom left a widow, a daughter and six sons”. He died of tuberculosis which he had been suffering with for 8 months. The death certificate shows the informant being Arthur Groom who was present at the death.
